Understand Tracking Links

Understanding the functions, structure, and types of Airbridge tracking links helps you use them well. This guide is for marketers and explains what tracking links do, how they're structured, and what types exist.

Functions

Tracking links start working when users view or click an ad. They collect the touchpoints and campaign data Airbridge needs to measure performance, and send users who click the ad to the destination set in the Airbridge dashboard.

Here's the overall flow of creating a tracking link in the Airbridge dashboard and sharing it with an ad channel.

  1. Create a tracking link in the Airbridge dashboard.

  2. Register or share the tracking link with the ad channel you'll run ads on. Register it directly as a landing URL in the ad channel's dashboard, or send it to your ad channel contact.

  3. Run ads with the tracking link on the ad channel.

  4. When a user views or clicks the ad, the tracking link works. It collects the data from the ad and sends the user to the destination you set in advance.

  5. Check the collected data in Airbridge reports or raw data.

Structure

A tracking link consists of a domain, app name, channel name, and parameter pairs that carry campaign and destination data. The domain is abr.ge. app_name is your service's app name registered in Airbridge, and channel_name is the name of the ad channel where the tracking link is used. After these come parameter pairs that carry data such as the campaign name, ad group, ad creative, and keywords, along with destination information. For more details on tracking link parameters, see this article.

Tracking link structure example: https://abr.ge/@app_name/channel_name?parameter1_name={parameter1_value}&parameter2_name={parameter2_value}

The domain, app name, and channel name appear in a fixed format before the question mark (?), and the parameter pairs come after it.

Types

There are two types of tracking links by channel: integrated channel tracking links and custom channel tracking links.

Integrated channel tracking links are for channels already integrated with Airbridge. Each channel has its own predefined structure, and the channel fills the ad data into the parameter values.

Custom channel tracking links are for owned media, earned media, and channels not integrated with Airbridge. A QR code and a short link are provided as well. You can use a custom domain instead of abr.ge, and set the thumbnail, title, and description shown when the link is shared on social media in the social share preview.
